For the past 10 years, Andrea and I have been making an annual range of functional vessels that were marketed as BTU Studio, receiving recognition in numerous publications in the UK (Financial Times, House & Garden) and the US (Architectural Digest), and winning awards (Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Crafts Council of Ireland). When we finally succeeded in purchasing a farm property on the north Antrim coast of Ireland in the fall of 2016, it seemed like the right time to reconsider our branding.
We needed to find a name that reflected our new circumstances--the consolidation of our home and studio into one site and the collaborative nature of our work with glass. We considered names that included our new setting (the gorgeous coastline near Ballintoy harbour) but finally settled on using our own reputation as artists as a primary identifier.
Collectively, Andrea and I have over 40 years of professional experience in working with glass: making gallery pieces, designing and producing production wares, executing public commissions, teaching workshops and publishing article on contemporary glass. Our new studio has an extensive range of facilities for glassblowing, flameworking, fusing, cold-working, sandblasting and much more. The simplest and most straightforward way of communicating our capabilities and ambition seemed to be to go forward as Benefield Spencer Glass.
